“Is Ethan treating you right?” Ben asks as he walks into his office. The hour I’ve been in here feels like an eternity. It’s been a constant loop of Ethan attempting to get information while I toy with him like a puppet on a string. Although it started out as fun, I’m now bored.

“He’s been the perfect gentleman, haven’t you, Ethan?” I glance over to him and smile.

Ethan stands and moves toward the door. “Are you taking Anna home?” he asks Ben.

“No, I need my car,” I say. Ethan’s bitter smile tells me he knows he’s been defeated in this instance. I’m at least one step ahead, and we both know it. One day my arrogance might get me into trouble, but until that day happens, I’m not going to stop being me.

Ethan leaves without another word, and I stand to walk over to Ben. “You can stay at my house tonight considering this is your last night here.”

“With everything that’s happened, I’ll add another day or two to my stay.” Besides, now I really need to know what Ethan is hiding in Bankstown Creek. I need to find out where it is, and I need to burn it to the ground, or I need to stop it. “You know I can’t stay.”

“I know,” he acknowledges. “Have you got your stuff?”

I tap my jeans pocket to check for my car key. “I do.” Ethan still has my phone and I doubt I’ll see it back, and even if I do I know he’ll have fitted a program to track me.

We walk out and I stop where Grace is. “Thank you for being so kind.”

“You’re welcome.”

Ben wraps his arm around my waist and we continue toward the front door. “Anna!” I hear Ethan calling. “You left your phone behind.” He thrusts it into my hands so I have to take it.

“Did I? With everything that happened today, I must’ve overlooked it.” I hold the phone up and smile. “Thank you, Ethan.” I slide it into my pocket.

The curiosity is burning through me as Ben drives us back so I can pick up my car. I really want to know what Ethan’s done to my phone, but I don’t have my computer or even the phone I use for work on me. “Are you sure you don’t want to stay with me tonight? You can sleep in the guest room, and I promise I’ll keep my hands to myself.” He glances at me as he drives. “It even has a lock if you’re worried.”

He's adorable. “No, I can’t. Maybe tomorrow we can have lunch or dinner. But don’t you have to work?”

“I’m still on vacation for a few more days. Maybe you’ll consider staying until I go back to work?”

I hate this. I really like Ben, but I can’t keep putting off the inevitable. I have to kill him, and soon, before I do something stupid like change my mind. “I’m not sure if I can,” I honestly reply. We drive the remaining distance to my car in silence.
